Embracing the Skilled Trades

Growing up my parents always instilled the idea of hard work and success going hand in hand. This guiding philosophy has instilled in me a work ethic that I know will be beneficial. However, the way hard work and success are defined by my parents are different in many ways then my own. Much like many other young people, I grew up being told that in order to be successful you must focus on receiving a university education that leads to a corporate job. I sympathize with this notion- after all it was, and still is, hard for my parents (who sacrificed everything to come to Canada) to measure success in any other manner.

In today’s fast-paced and technology-driven world, there’s a widespread misconception that success can only be found through a post-secondary degree or a corporate career. This notion has inadvertently led to stigmas surrounding skilled trades, dismissing them as inferior or undesirable career paths. How often do you hear the following: “The trades are for those who lack ambition, passion and creativity”, “Why would you want to do something that lacks a meaningful contribution to society?”.

It’s time to challenge these preconceived notions and recognize the significant potential and positive impact skilled trades offer. In this article, we’ll explore why stigmas around the skilled trades are unwarranted and how they present an excellent opportunity to make money and contribute in a meaningful way to society.

Dismantling the Myths

Myth 1: Skilled Trades Offer Limited Financial Opportunities

Contrary to popular belief, skilled trades can be financially rewarding. Skilled tradespeople often earn competitive wages, and as they gain experience and expertise, their earning potential increases. According to talent.com the average skilled trades salary in Canada is $70,161 per year. Many trades, such as plumbing, electrical work, and carpentry, are in high demand, leading to a constant need for skilled professionals, which translates to job security and steady income.

Myth 2: Skilled Trades Lack Innovation

While the stereotypes of a tradesperson may be associated with manual labor and sticking with the tried and true approach, the reality is quite different. Whether it’s working on sustainable construction practices or utilizing advanced machinery, the skilled trades industry is continuously evolving, offering opportunities to embrace innovation and stay at the forefront of progress.

Myth 4: Lacks a Meaningful Contributions to Society

This is arguably the most harmful myth. Skilled tradespeople are the backbone of our society. They are responsible for constructing and maintaining the essential infrastructure we rely on daily. From bridges and roads to hospitals and schools, tradespeople build the foundations that underpin our communities.

Electricians, plumbers, and HVAC technicians work tirelessly to ensure our homes and workplaces are safe and comfortable environments. Their expertise guarantees that we have access to electricity, clean water, and properly functioning heating and cooling systems.

Myth 5. You won’t build a legacy or have any pride

Skilled trades provide an avenue to create a tangible legacy. How often do we look at architectural designs, towering buildings, beautiful churches, synagogues, mosques, temples and forget that people like you and I who pursued the trades created such art? There is something deeply impactful about seeing the final product that you contributed too. I know all too well that after I built my mini bookshelf, bed frame, and side table I felt pride in it. Let us take a moment to imagine the feelings that can come from building the foundation building blocks that people in society use every day! From awe-inspiring architectural wonders to intricate artwork, tradespeople leave their mark on society for generations to come. The pride derived from seeing their work come to life is immeasurable, and it creates a sense of accomplishment that cannot be replicated in many other fields.

Filling the Skills Gap: The Crucial Role of Skilled Trades

With a significant portion of the workforce heading towards retirement, there’s an urgent need for a new generation of skilled professionals. By pursuing careers in skilled trades, individuals can not only find fulfilling work but also contribute to filling this crucial void. Learning a skilled trade can be one of the fastest, most reliable, and cheapest ways to get a great career. We all want something that not only provides meaning in our daily lives but also sustains us financially. In many cases, occupations in the skilled trades will end up paying you more than the average college graduate makes.

A Personal Testament

My step-dad, a skilled plumber, takes immense pride in his work, and rightfully so. Not only is he exceptionally smart and quick-witted, but he also finds profound meaning in his daily responsibilities. As he tackles each plumbing challenge with unwavering determination, it becomes evident that his expertise goes far beyond fixing pipes and leaks. His keen problem-solving skills and attention to detail ensure that every job is done to perfection, leaving his clients satisfied- always. What sets him apart is the genuine care he shows for his customers, always taking the time to explain the issue and offer helpful advice. For him, being a plumber is more than just a job; it’s a fulfilling vocation where he can utilize his intelligence, wit, and compassion to make a positive impact on people’s lives. His commitment to excellence and his genuine passion for his craft inspire not only me but everyone around him.
